Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE
Career fairs for the spring are still occurring. There is one more career fair this month that I recommend and another that may have some EEE opportunities.
FNR Career Fair
The FNR career fair is February 12th in the PMU from 9:30am to 3:30pm. It just says PMU for the location so I am assuming it is in the ballrooms. There are multiple companies that have Environmental and/or Ecological Engineering listed as a major they are interested in. There are both full time and internship opportunities so if you’re looking for a job you should attend. More information on the companies and positions is found here. This fair is not on career fair plus, so you’ll need the link to see the companies attending prior to the fair.
This is the first time this fair lists EEE specifically. Companies not on our list after looking at it quickly that I would approach include IDEM and some of the DNR listings. There are multiple DNR listing-some of which aren’t applicable but there are several that don’t list EEE that I think might be of interest.
As always, if a company seems interesting to you, approach them and see if there might be an opportunity for you. I highly recommend this fair as it is small and focused on environmental/FNR opportunities. EEE students have done well in the past at this fair.
Ag Career Fair
Another fair at the end of the month you may attend is the College of Agriculture Spring Career Fair. If you have limited time, I always recommend EXPO and FNR in the spring semester and suggest skipping the Ag Fair. The Ag Fair will be on February 28th from 10am to 2:30pm. This fair is also not on the career fair plus app. All the companies that attend will be ag focused. Since it is through the College of Agriculture, you will need to look at the majors that are environmentally related. You should be able to see the majors and specific positions here. Directions on filtering jobs through the CCO system are given here. The companies attending, website, and description of each business is found here. Remember any company that makes something needs an environmental engineer for environmental regulations, not to mention sustainability goals.
As of now, the Ag Fair will be the last (EEE related) career fair until the “Just in Time” career fair at the end of the semester. You never know which or how many companies will come to “Just in Time” as it is those still looking for employees.

The following professional development event will take place on February 26 from 11:30 am – 1:00 PM in WALC 3148. Lunch will be provided, and registration is required” Patent Agent Careers in Life Sciences
Did you know that people who graduate with an engineering or technical degree are eligible to sit for the Patent Bar exam that is administered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)? After passing the exam, the person becomes a patent agent and is qualified to represent and advise inventors on their patent applications before the USPTO.
Barnes & Thornburg LLP, a full-service law firm with a strong intellectual property department, is hosting an event for Purdue graduate students pursuing a degree in biology, pharmacy, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, and similar fields.
Becoming a patent agent is a great alternative career path for scientists who don’t necessarily desire to be laboratory-focused but wants to utilize their scientific knowledge daily. If you are interested in learning more about this career path, please attend B&T’s event where students can how to a patent agent and what the job entails. Lunch will be provided to those who attend!
