SEE Student Explores Sustainable Aviation in France
For Jacob Nickel, a student in Purdue University's School of Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering (SEE), studying abroad in France offered a unique opportunity to explore the future of sustainable aviation while experiencing one of Europe's most influential aerospace hubs.
Originally from Zionsville, Indiana, Nickel participated in a study abroad course focused on sustainability within the aviation industry. While France wasn't his primary destination of choice, the course content made the decision easy.

"It wasn't really a matter of where I wanted to go," Nickel explained. "I chose the program because the subject matter was interesting, and it just happened to be in France. Aviation is a major industry there, especially with Airbus headquarters located in Toulouse."
Throughout the program, Nickel learned about emerging technologies and strategies designed to make air travel more environmentally friendly, including alternative fuels and innovative propulsion systems.
Outside the classroom, he experienced some of France's most iconic landmarks and destinations. Highlights included visiting the Eiffel Tower at night, exploring the Louvre Museum, and spending a day at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, one of the world's leading aircraft manufacturers.
Beyond the technical knowledge he gained, Nickel says the experience expanded his perspective on global sustainability challenges.
"One of the biggest things I learned was to think on a broader scale," he said. "It's easy to focus only on what's happening in the United States, but looking at how the rest of the world approaches the same challenges provides valuable insight and a more diverse perspective."
The experience also introduced him to new possibilities within the aviation industry. While it hasn't fundamentally changed his career goals, it has sparked an interest in the growing field of sustainable aviation.
"This trip opened my mind to a whole new side of aviation where I could potentially make an impact," Nickel said. "It's something I'd like to learn more about as I consider future career opportunities."
Reflecting on his time in France, Nickel says the combination of hands-on learning, cultural experiences, and connections with fellow students made the program especially memorable.

"Learning about sustainable aviation, visiting Airbus, exploring Paris and Toulouse, and meeting so many great people have all been major highlights of the trip," Nickel said.
Through global experiences like this, SEE students are gaining firsthand insight into the complex environmental challenges facing industries around the world—and developing the perspectives needed to create sustainable solutions for the future.
