Expanding Environmental and Ecological Engineering Roots to Build World Impact at Kimley-Horn
Abby Fouts Abigail Fouts LinkedIn Profile, a rising senior in Environmental and Ecological Engineering EEE Program, is expanding her strong School of Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering SEE roots as a Water Resources Engineering Intern at Kimley-Horn.
Abby sits in the Indianapolis office with Kimley-Horn's Water Resources Team, a combination of Water/Wastewater and Surface Water engineers. Kimley-Horn is an engineering, planning, and design consultant with many offices across the contiguous states, and they have just about as many different disciplines.
Comparable to SEE’s focus on growth to build a bigger, better world impact, Abby’s time as an intern has been filled with growth and learning.
“This summer, I have gotten to dip my toes into just about every type of project our team works on. I have learned how to map floodplains in HEC-RAS, how to understand and work with HUGE Civil3D CAD files, a lot about pipes, a lot about design and consulting, and even more about myself.”
As the #12 undergraduate environmental engineering program in the nation, ranked by U.S. News & World Report, EEE provides students with the relevant tools for real-world application. Abby Fouts’ work in the program is equipping her with a foundation in civil design, development, and environmental remediation.
“My main experience this summer has been in serving our private clients with conveyance design and modeling,” shared Abby.
“Our team in Indy is one of the more recently established water teams among Kimley-Horn offices, so I can't wait to see how the practice changes and clients grow in their future.”
“Having previously worked in environmental remediation, working on the design side of things has given me great perspective. For sustainability to thrive in the world of civil design and development, the client must be choosing it. For the client to choose it, the consultants must be driving it. In the innovative, passionate, and caring folks I've worked with at Kimley-Horn, I can see this drive growing. I am excited for a future of clients choosing sustainability and hope to contribute to it myself. Until then, I will return to Purdue with more passion and motivation thanks to all that I've learned at Kimley this summer!”
