Faculty Spotlight - Prof. Zhi Zhou
Professor Zhi “George” Zhou joined the Division of Environmental and Ecological Engineering and Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University in June 2014. Currently he is teaching water and wastewater treatment processes (EEE 495/CE 497) and environmental biotechnology (CE 597) at Purdue.
Prior to joining Purdue, he was an assistant professor of Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he taught wastewater microbiology, topics in environmental biotechnology, environmental engineering principles, and design project.
Prof. Zhou’s research focuses on the application of biotechnologies in engineering systems. Recent projects include development of molecular microbiology techniques to evaluate antibiotic resistant bacteria in natural and urban environments, production of cost-effective biofuels, nanomaterials for water purification, and indirect and direct potable water reuse.
Prior to joining NUS, Prof. Zhou worked as a consulting engineer for Carollo Engineers in California. As a consultant he conducted projects on UV disinfection, emerging contaminant removal in membrane-based and conventional wastewater treatment plants, and cost-effective treatment technologies for water reclamation. Overall he has conducted finished system validation and performance evaluations for more than 30 UV disinfection systems from five major UV equipment manufacturers.
Prof. Zhou has his P.E. license in Civil Engineering from the state of California. He is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, International Water Association, American Society for Microbiology, and Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors.
