Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)

Racing for success

Purdue's chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has been active since 1936! Our main activity is designing, building, testing, and competing with custom race cars as part of SAE's University Programs. Being a part of a motorsports team is a great way to develop teamwork, learn how to design, showcase leadership skills, learn the automotive business, and have fun! Recruiters love SAE students, and being part of a team is a huge resumé boost. SAE teams are open to both newcomers and experienced students, so attend a callout and join a team today!

Our three SAE teams are:

Purdue Baja Racing

At Purdue Baja Racing, we strive to develop the best student engineers, able to take on any future professional challenges. Purdue Baja Racing designs and builds an offroad racecar to compete in competition every year. Baja SAE offers a completely unique experience where student engineers complete a rigorous engineering design cycle every single year. From initial ideation and CAD design to testing and validation, Purdue students involved in the Baja team can apply what they learn in the classroom to a real and complex engineering problem. Baja, unlike the other SAE competitions, is highly unpredictable. With a 4-hour long wheel-to-wheel endurance race that puts the car through extreme terrain, the car needs to be designed to withstand anything thrown at it. This unpredictability allows Baja SAE to be a truly unique experience with constant learning and growth opportunities for anyone looking to get involved.

Purdue Formula SAE

Purdue Formula SAE is a student design team that design, builds, and races a small open wheel car every year. This car must adhere to a specific set of rules given to the team by SAE International. The Formula SAE competition is designed to test each team's knowledge of aspects of design and manufacturing. The car competes in a set of static and dynamic events to evaluate drivability, reliability, and overall performance of the car. Members of Purdue Formula SAE create a well-designed car every year by combining knowledge acquired from classes and hands on experiences and skills. The team values dedication and collaboration and is always aiming to combine the team's engineering talents and experiences to build and design a unique race car.
