Experiential Education

What is ExEd?

Experiential education is a planned pedagogy centering on an authentic experience to strengthen students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities, paired with student reflection. There are many ways a student can incorporate Experiential learning into their academic journey. Purdue EEE focuses on Service-learning, Internships, Co-ops, Study Abroad opportunities, and Senior Design.

SERVICE-LEARNING

Service-learning is all about applying learning from the classroom to an opportunity that helps a community. EEE has a course dedicated to helping the Greater Lafayette Area as well as teaching students hands on. "Community-engaged Design" or "EEE 472" gives students opportunities to learn about environmental designs and apply them to specific service projects. It also has a strong focus on reflection and discussion to gain further insight and understanding.

INTERNSHIPS

Internships are a common way for students to learn more about a particular field or job. Whether paid or unpaid, internships can be a keystone in learning and future job placement. EEE students have completed internships at: Evonik, Heritage Environmental Services, LyondellBasell, US Army Engineering Corps, and many more!

CO-OPS

Co-ops differ from internships, but are equally (if not more) beneficial for a student's education. Co-ops are always paid and are often with several different companies and/or areas within a company. This provides a better perspective of what a company does and insight into what a student is interested in.

STUDY ABROAD

There is so much you can learn from world. Another type of experiential education focuses on learning about, from, and in the context of regional or international cultures. This may include domestic or international travel or virtual interactions. EEE students have studied in Spain, Australia, the Dominican Republic, and more.
