Sutherland researching smart/sustainable manufacturing technologies, Research initiative part of $38.9 million Lilly Endowment grant
John W. Sutherland, the Fehsenfeld Family Head of Environmental and Ecological Engineering (EEE), is researching smart/sustainable manufacturing as part of a multidisciplinary research team funded by a $38.9 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to the Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN). WHIN is a 10-county initiative in North Central Indiana devoted to working together to fuel prosperity for the region by harnessing the power of emerging digital technologies related to manufacturing and agriculture.
WHIN’s long-term vision is to make the 10 counties the global epicenter for digital agriculture and next-generation manufacturing empowered by smart “Internet of Things” platforms. As part of the grant, Prof. Sutherland, his students, and collaborators will develop a manufacturing testbed to demonstrate new smart/sustainable manufacturing technologies.
