Saurabh Bagchi, CRISP Director, has written an article on the Medium blog site on the challenges and successes in security of autonomous systems. These are placed in the context of their assured autonomy project that is part of Army's Artificial Intelligence Innovation Institute (A2I2). The project involves 5 faculty members: Somali Chaterji, Mung Chiang, David Inouye, and Prateek Mittal (Princeton), apart from Bagchi. A2I2 brings together 9 separate project teams across multiple universities working on different aspects of security in AI/ML systems.
The article by Saurabh describes broadly the challenges of securing autonomous systems. It surveys progress that has been made, the open challenges, and then goes into the technical contributions being made by A2I2. The two-part question that the article raises and answers are:
1. How dependable are big data technologies — can we trust life-and-death decisions to these algorithms?
2. And what is the trend line, i.e., are big data technologies becoming more dependable over time, and, if so, at what rate?
