About the (IN)SCRIBE Program

Well-trained biomedical engineers are key contributors to the development of innovative healthcare solutions. Clinical immersion experiences prepare biomedical engineering students to realize where and how medical device translation occurs. The proximity of Purdue's Indianapolis campus to urban hospitals that serve varied patient populations presents an opportunity for a community-engaged experience that will build student cultural and social competencies in tandem with integrative engineering skills.The INdiana Summer Clinical Residency in Innovation for Biomedical Engineers, or (IN)SCRIBE Program, is a paid six-week clinical immersion and team-based design internship for biomedical engineering students. Participants in the program, or (IN)SCRIBE Scholars, will be BME undergraduate students at Purdue who apply for the Program and are selected to participate. The (IN)SCRIBE Scholars will engage in design training, meaningful clinical immersion, and team-based design, with ultimate goals of identifying unmet urban healthcare needs and confronting Indiana's healthcare challenges. The program consists of four phases, as depicted below.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligibile to participate in the (IN)SCRIBE Program and receive funding, a student must:

  • be enrolled as an undergraduate student* in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering
  • complete an (IN)SCRIBE Program Application
  • be available for full-time (i.e., M-F, 7 am - 4 pm) activities in Indianapolis throughout the program period
  • enroll in a zero-credit (no-cost) course during the summer program and not enroll in other courses during this session
  • be eligible to work for pay in the United States

* This includes students completing their first years at Purdue in Indianapolis

How to Apply

Students interested in participating in the (IN)SCRIBE Program will be required to submit the (IN)SCRIBE Program Application, which requires a cover letter and résumé. The cover letter should address the following prompts:

  • Why do you wish to participate in the (IN)SCRIBE Program?
  • What do you expect to learn as an (IN)SCRIBE Scholar?
  • How would participation in the (IN)SCRIBE Program help you reach your career goals?
  • Describe your need for relevant engineering experience.

Selection of Participants

All applications from eligible individuals will be scored by a review panel consisting of both Program Directors, one further BME faculty/staff member, and one past (IN)SCRIBE Program participant. During application review, the panel may consider:

  • Formatting and style of the the cover letter and résumé
  • Clarity and persuasiveness of response to cover letter prompts
  • Undergraduate career level (e.g., rising junior)
  • Past experiences (e.g., research, internship) described on the submitted résumé and/or need for relevant engineering experience
  • Prior submission of application(s) to the (IN)SCRIBE Program

Select applicants may be invited for a brief interview with one or both Program Directors. We will work with the review panel to rank the applicants so that additional offers can be made should any of the selected applicants decline their offer.
