Prof. Michael Sangid Awarded Young Investigator Program Award from the Office of Naval Research

Event Date: April 28, 2014
Michael D. Sangid, assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics has received a grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) through its Young Investigator Program (YIP) award.

Congratulations to Professor Michael D. Sangid, assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics, who has received a grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) through its Young Investigator Program (YIP) award.

The ONR YIP is one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country. Its purpose is to fund early-career academic researchers—called investigators—whose scientific pursuits show exceptional promise for supporting the Department of Defense, while also promoting their professional development.  “Support of outstanding young research scientists is one of the ways the Navy maintains a technological edge throughout the world,” said Dr. Lawrence Schuette, ONR’s acting director of research.

A total of 24 YIP winners this year were selected from a competitive, diverse pool of nearly 280 candidates. They represent 19 academic institutions across the country in disciplines including machine learning, computational biology, optical and acoustic sensors, structural dynamics, material science, corrosion, fluid structure interaction, modeling and simulation, communication, robotics and neural science.

Prof. Sangid proposed research is entitled “Relationships between the galvanic driving force and strain energy density accumulation."  This research will use state-of-the-art strain mapping to investigate the influence of galvanic reactions on material degradation and structural integrity.  The research aims to unify approaches based on mechanics (relying on stress-state and deformation as the driving force for corrosion) and chemistry (relying on local chemical potentials for the basis of a galvanic reaction).

Prof. Sangid received his PhD from Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2010.  He is a recipient of the TMS Young Leaders Award in 2013 and an AFOSR YIP Award in 2014.
