Congratulations to AAE graduate students Amanda Haapala who was placed first, and to Irsha Ashok Pardeshi, who was placed second in the Engineering Sciences section of the Sigma Xi Poster Competition.
Amanda’s advisor is Dr. Kathleen Howell and her poster was entitled “Trajectory Design in the Spatial Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem.”
Amanda received her B.S. in Physics from Towson University in 2008. She began graduate studies at Purdue University in the fall of 2008 and completed her M.S. in 2010. She is currently Ph.D. student and her research focus is on the application of Poincaré maps in multi-body regimes to facilitate spacecraft trajectory design.
Irsha’s advisor is Dr. Tom Shih and her poster was entitled “Flow and Heat Transfer in an L-Shaped Cooling Passage with Ribs and Pin Fins for the Trailing Edge of a Gas-Turbine Vane and Blade.”
Irsha received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), India in 2008 where she graduated in the top 7% of her class. She is due to receive Master’s degree in Spring 2013. Her research focus is on CFD and heat transfer analysis of trailing edge of a gas turbine blade.
Sigma Xi is the international, multidisciplinary honor society of research scientists and engineers whose programs and activities promote the health of the scientific enterprise, reward excellence in scientific research and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among scientists in all fields.
It has nearly 60,000 members who were elected to membership based on their research potential or achievements. More than 500 Sigma Xi chapters in North America and around the world provide a supportive environment for interdisciplinary research at colleges and universities, industry research centers and government laboratories. More than 200 members have won the Nobel Prize.
