The School of Aeronautics and Astronautics congratulates Jian Xu for winning the prestigious Bilsland Dissertation Fellowships for the 2013-14 academic year.
Jian Xu is a 3rd year PhD student in propulsion in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering at Purdue. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA).
Jian is currently working with Prof. Li Qiao on numerical simulation of coal gasification processes. The motivation behind the project is that fuel synthesis by coal and biomass gasification could potentially provide a solution to the problem of increasing demand of energy and transportation fuels. The focus of this research is to gain a fundamental understanding of the complex physical and chemical processes in coal gasification and to help the development of new technologies, such as the solar-driven gasification and radiation-induced droplet breakup of nano-dispersed coal-in-water colloidal fuels.
The Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship was established to provide support to outstanding Ph.D. candidates in their final year of writing. It is expected that the doctoral degree will be received at the conclusion of the fellowship year.
