Sigma Gamma Tau, the National Aerospace Engineering Honor Society, recognizes Assistant Professor Dr. Michael Grant, as the December 2012 recipient of the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Award

Sigma Gamma Tau, the National Aerospace Engineering Honor Society, recognizes Assistant Professor Dr. Michael Grant, as the December  2012 recipient of the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Award.

This is currently Dr. Grant’s first semester teaching at Purdue; he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Aerospace Engineering earlier this year. His research and experience is focused on advanced technologies of high performance hypersonic flight vehicles to support entry, descent, and landing of human and robotic systems at Earth and Mars. Additionally, Dr. Grant’s research has encompassed a variety of missions including Mars exploration, human lunar return, and conventional prompt global strike.

Dr. Grant was nominated for this award by four separate individuals. One individual noted that “he takes the time to make sure material is understood and is always open to questions. He is easy to talk to about things and is willing to give advice about which courses to take.” Another student in his AAE 251 class commented that “he has challenged me more than almost any other teacher or professor I have ever had. In doing this he has taught me more in 1 semester that I had ever thought possible.”

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Awards are given to individuals within the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics for going out of their way to help undergraduate and graduate students. Nominations can be made by any current AAE student on the Sigma Gamma Tau website, SGT Recognition.

Nominations are viewed by the chairperson of the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Awards committee and awarded on a monthly basis. Recipients of the awards are publically recognized in the Sigma Gamma Tau bulletin board and receive a card signed by AAE students.

Sigma Gamma Tau was founded on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, on February 28, 1953, “to offer appropriate recognition to persons of superior scholarship, outstanding character, and professional achievement in the field of Aeronautical Engineering.” Sigma Gamma Tau’s collegiate chapters elect annually to membership those students, alumni, and professionals who by conscientious attention to their studies or professional duties uphold this high standard for the betterment of their profession.
