Prof. Wayne Chen - Appointed Associate Head of AAE Graduate Program

Professor Wayne Chen has been appointed to serve as Associate Head of the Graduate Program effective from January 2, 2012. Professor Marc Williams continues in his role as Associate Head for the Undergraduate Program.
Dr. Wayne Chen, PhD, California Institute of Technology ’95, is a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Materials Engineering. He is considered as one of the world's top researcher in the development of experimental methods for the interrogation of dynamic behavior of materials. His methods are being used at numerous laboratories, including the Sandia National Laboratories, the National Institute of Standard and Technology, and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory.
Since joining Purdue in Jan. 2005, he has been involved in teaching AAE 204, 352, 553, and several 590s and MSE 597. Within his research field, Professor Chen has published over 120 journal articles and the only monograph on the topic. Also, he has been PI/co-PI on nearly $30M in external grants. On graduate student supervision, he has graduated 29 MS and PhD students. Professor Chen's accomplishments have been recognized by a number of awards.
Professor Chen was the plenary keynote speaker at the Annual Conference and Exposition of the Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM) in 2010. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He was named University Faculty Scholar at Purdue in 2005 and currently serves as a member of the United States National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the top mechanics committee in the US. He was the recipient of the C.T. Sun Research Award from the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue in 2008.
The school thanks the departing Associate Head, Professor Tasos Lyrintzis for his many years of dedicated service and wishes him well in his new position of the Chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle University in Florida.
