Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, is the flagship University of the six-campus Purdue University system. Purdue was founded on May 6, 1869, as a land-grant university when the Indiana General Assembly accepted a donation of land and money from Lafayette businessman John Purdue to establish a college of science, technology, and agriculture in his name. The first classes were held on September 16, 1874, with six instructors and 39 students.
The West Lafayette campus offers more than 200 majors for undergraduates, over 70 master’s and doctoral programs. In 2018, Purdue’s College of Engineering graduate program ranked 7th in the United States (U.S. News & World Report). In addition, Purdue has 18 intercollegiate sports teams and more than 850 student organizations. Purdue enrolls the fourth largest international student population of any university in the United States. Environmental and Ecological Engineering (EEE), the conference host, was formally launched in July 2006. As of Fall 2018, there are 170+ students enrolled in the program.
Purdue EEE employs a modern approach to environmental engineering. Rather than only considering conventional waste emission treatment, our students approach problems from an integrated perspective that considers both environmental and ecological aspects. We seek a broad systems perspective for addressing environmental issues, with a focus on ecological interactions and resilient designs that take into account complexity and connectivity between systems. These goals are supported by EEE faculty who have joint appointments in seven academic units. In the undergraduate curriculum, this philosophy drives the early focus on systems thinking and understanding. This philosophy leads to the inclusion of significant course requirements in ecology, sustainability, and industrial ecology.
