Mounting a Network Drive on the Raspberry Pi

Enabling SMB Drive Feature on Your Computer

Before you can mount a network drive on your Raspberry Pi, you need to enable the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol on the computer where the drive is hosted. You can either follow the instructions here or follow a step-by-step guide for enabling SMB1 on Windows 11 below:

What is SMB1 and Why is it Used?

SMB1 (Server Message Block version 1) is a network protocol used for sharing files, printers, and other resources. It is often required for compatibility with older devices. Note that SMB1 is outdated and less secure, so enable is only if absolutely necessary.

How to Enable SMB1 on Windows 11

1) Open Settings:

Open the Start menu and click on Settings.

2) Go to Apps:

In Settings, click on Apps in the left sidebar.

3) Click Optional Features:

Under Apps, click on Optional Features.

4) Add a Feature:

Scroll down and click "Add a feature."

5) Search for SMB1:

In the search box, type "SMB1" and select the checkbox next to "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support."

6) Install SMB1:

Click Install and wait for the installation to complete.

Mounting the Network Drive on Raspberry Pi

1) Open the File Explorer on Raspberry Pi:

Open the File explorer on your Raspberry Pi.

2) Enter Network Drive Address:

In the address bar, type smb://[IP-Address of the Network Drive] (e.g., smb://192.168.4.3 ).

3) Authenticate:

You will be prompted to enter your username and password. Make sure to click "Remember forever" to save the credentials.

Additional Tips

Troubleshooting Authentication:

If "Remember forever" causes long loading times or issues, try selecting "Remember password until you logout."

After these steps, your Raspberry Pi should be connected to the network drive. You can now easily access network folders.
