Title: Exploring methodologies for studying listening effort in listeners with or without hearing loss
Abstract: When attempting to understand speech, listeners may exert different levels of listening effort, depending on the auditory environment, motivation, and degree of hearing impairment, among many other factors. Methods for assessing listening effort are diverse in the literature, but typically fall into three categories: subjective, behavioral, and physiological. Utilizing methods from each category (self-report, dual-task paradigm, and heart rate variability, respectively), we explored how this variety of methodologies explains the listening effort experiences of participants with normal hearing and/or participants with hearing aids.
