Congratulations to Our 2021 SURF Researchers

Congratulations to Our 2021 SURF Researchers

Over the summer, Caitlin O'Brien, Krish Gupta, and Chris Trombley worked with the Chawla research group as part of the Summer Undergaduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. This program pairs undergraduates with a PI and research mentor to complete and present an independent experiment. The three SURF projects were:

  • Caitlin: Microstructural Characterization of Spark Plasma Sintered Al-SiC-Graphite by 3D X-ray Tomography
  • Krish: Artificial Aging and Microstructural Characterization of an Additively Manufactured Aerospace Aluminum Alloy with Ceramic Additions
  • Chris: Geometric Sensitive Loss Function for X-ray Micro-Tomography Segmentation

More information about these projects is available through the SURF symposium abstract booklet. For her work, Caitlin was recognized with the Outstanding First Time Researcher Award. Krish additionally did an outstanding job in his first formal research experience, and Chris was able to complete his project fully remotely through a modified partnership with the University of Louisville. Additional thanks are also given to Hamid Torbati-Sarraf and Daniel Sinclair who were research mentors.
