Undergrad Research Assistant Opening in Manufacturing Design Lab
Undergrad Research Assistant Opening in Manufacturing Design Lab
Open Position: Undergraduate research assistant for hourly pay, 6-10hrs per week available immediately. Undergraduate research for credit may be available next semester. We are looking for someone with some knowledge of structures and CAD experience.
Research Topics: The MD lab is developing the design and manufacturing processes to take advantage of the design potential enabled by hybrid-molding manufacturing processes for composite structures. Hybrid-molded composites present a high rate, low cost manufacturing process for structural components in fields such as aerospace, automotive, and sports equipment.
Potential projects based on applicant skill set, interest, and lab needs:
- Demonstration part design
- Manufacturing jig/mold design and fabrication
- Iterative CAE analysis of part designs
- Custom machine CAM setup and programming
- Mechanical testing and data analysis
- Dimensional stability analysis
Desirable Skills:
Ideal candidates will be motivated to learn and apply knowledge of polymers, structural mechanics, and manufacturing to analyze novel high rate composite manufacturing processes. Relevant prior experience is very desirable but not required.
Valuable skill sets (not requirements):
- Parametric CAD using solid and surface modelling (Catia, Solidworks, NX, Creo)
- Structural and manufacturing simulation (ABAQUS, Moldex3D)
- Experience with G code (NX CAM is a plus)
- Basic programming/scripting skills (MATLAB, Python, etc.)
- General practical lab skills including part fabrication, 3D printing, electrical wiring, etc.
Our lab is located north of the research park at 1105 Challenger Ave so keep travel time in mind with your availability.
