The brainstem neurophysiology laboratory will be presenting work at the ARO mid-winter meeting in Baltimore MD. February 11-15, 2017.

We will present three posters in Baltimore:

1) "In-vivo intracellular characterization of ITD sensitivity in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus." Sensitivity to micro-second inter-aural timing differences (ITDs) emerges in specialized neurons in the medial superior olive (MSO), and underlies many aspects of spatial hearing. Axonal projections from MSO neurons ascend in the lateral lemniscus. Their post-synaptic targets include the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) and inferior colliculus. We characterized the in-vivo intracellular responses of neurobiotin-labelled DNLL neurons to binaural sounds, and compared their responses to those obtained from MSO axonal recordings.

2) "Level-dependence of tuning in the auditory nerve." This work is based on the responses of single auditory nerve fibers. Their firing patterns offer insight to the cochlea's mechanical response properties. We present analyses of responses to broadband noise which suggest the level dependence of filter bandwidth is not as severe as previously thought when assessed using tone stimuli.

3) "Comparison of Behavioral and Neural Amplitude Modulation Detection Threshold in Normal-Hearing Chinchillas." This work brings together single-unit neurophysiological data with behavioral data on the detection of amplitude modulation (important for speech perception).
