Prof. Saurabh Bagchi to be given Test-of-Time award at DSN 2022 conference

Event Date: April 27, 2022
Prof. Saurabh Bagchi is to receive the Test-of-Time award at the IEEE International Symposium on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN) to be held in Baltimore June 27-30. This is for his paper authored with two graduate students, Amiya Maji and Fahad Arshad, and collaborator then at IBM Research (now at TU Delft), Jan Rellermeyer.

The paper for which Prof. Bagchi and his collaborators are being recognized was published in DSN 2012:

“An empirical study of the robustness of inter-component communication in Android”

The award is given by the IEEE TC on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance (TCFT) and IFIP Working Group 10.4 on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance (WG 10.4). The nomination for the award came from Claudio Basile of Google and Domenico Controneo of the University of Naples.

This paper has profoundly changed the way we design mobile OSes in general, and Android in particular. It has had far-reaching impact by showing the roadmap for how mobile OSes can be made more reliable and secure. This paper is distinctive in that it has had wide academic impact as well as impact through commercial adoption.

Dr. Amiya Maji is now a Senior Computational Scientist with ITaP at Purdue, Dr. Fahad Arshad is at VMWare, and Dr. Jan Rellermeyer is a faculty member at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in Delft, Netherlands.

This is one of two papers being recognized with a Test-of-Time award at DSN 2022.
