SFPL students Thomas Cunningham and Justin Mansell along with SFPL director David Spencer attended the 70th International Astronautical Congress in Washington DC this week to present a trio of papers covering the lab's research and involvement in flight projects.

The papers included Cunningham's PhD research in tools for automated mission planning with a Mars orbiter case study, Mansell's PhD research in applying machine learning to detect and diagnose faults onboard spacecraft, and preliminary results from the LightSail 2 solar sail mission for which Dr. Spencer is the project manager. The presentations were all well received and SFPL members took advantage of the opportunity to discuss next-generation ideas for space flight with attendees from all across the globe. More than 6500 people attended the conference, which is among the largest in the field of astronautics.
