Dr. Tony Joseph Mathew

Dr. Mathew joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2016. He developed novel methods to account for varying relative volatilities and unequal latent heats during modelling, and a computationally cheaper manner of checking feasibility of heat integrations during optimization, in order to identify heat-integrated energy-efficient configurations for multicomponent separation by distillation. He also developed tighter recovery relations in distillation. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Summer 2021.

Dr. Radhakrishna Tumbalam Gooty

Dr. Tumbalam Gooty joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2015. He formulated novel Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programs (MINLPs) for identifying energetically and exergetically efficient distillation configurations. Several instances of the MINLP remain beyond the scope of the state-of-the-art global solvers, so he developed novel reformulation and discretization based solution procedure to solve the MINLP to the desired optimality gap. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Fall 2020.

Dr. Jose Adrian Chavez Velasco

Dr. Chavez Velasco joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2016. He worked on the comparison of different separation technologies such as distillation and membranes, developing a framework for general application. He also worked on the comparison of different modes of distillation, such as heat-supplied, heat-pumped, and usages of intermediate reboiler/condenser. He developed an optimization model for determining the minimum work required by a membrane cascade for the separation of binary liquid and gas mixtures. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Summer 2020.

Dr. Zheyu Jiang

Dr. Jiang joined the group as a graduate student in Spring 2015. He developed new methods and algorithms to synthesize and optimize multi-component distillation systems. In particular, he developed nonlinear programming based global optimization algorithms for multi-component distillation configurations to minimize their total costs and to maximize their thermodynamic efficiency. He also developed the first shortcut based method to accurately calculate the minimum reflux ratio required for multifeed multiproduct columns. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Fall 2018.

Dr. Parham Mobed

Dr. Parham Mobed joined the group as a post doctoral research associate in Fall 2016. His work focused on developing methods and algorithms for optimizing multicomponent distillation configurations by formulating nonlinear programming problems and solving them to global optimum. The developed programs have been consolidated into a user-friendly interface that can be used by industrial practitioners. He also worked on the control of Dividing Wall Column configurations. He graduated from the group in Spring 2018. Currently, he is working at AspenTech

Dr. Gautham Madenoor Ramapriya

Dr. Gautham Madenoor Ramapriya joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2011. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Fall 2016. He is currently a post doctoral research associate at University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Dr. Joshua Huff

Dr. Joshua Huff joined the group as a graduate student in Spring 2010. His research focused on applying principles of membrane design and optimization to determine the optimal membrane cascade arrangement for multicomponent separations, as well as using principles of exergy and cost analysis to identify attractive distillation configurations. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Fall 2014.

Dr. Haibo Zhang

Dr. Haibo Zhang joined the group as a post doctoral research associate in Spring 2012. His research area focused on capital cost modeling and a mixed-integer formulation for optimizing distillation configurations.

Dr. Anirudh Shenvi

Dr. Anirudh Shenvi joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2007. Focusing on identifying useful heat integration approaches in distillation and synthesizing energy efficient multicomponent distillation sequences, he successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Spring 2012.

Dr. Ulaganathan Nallasivam joined the group as a post doctoral research associate in Spring 2010. His research area focused on globally optimal configuration for multicomponent distillation sequences and energy network problems. He graduated from the group in 2011.

Dr. Vishesh Shah

Dr. Vishesh Shah joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2006. He developed a systematic mathematical framework to identify energy efficient multicomponent distillation sequences with a focus on thermally coupled distillation sequences. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Fall 2010.

Dr. Rugved Pathare

Dr. Rugved Pathare joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2005. His research area focused on developing a framework for the design and optimization of membrane separation schemes. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Summer 2010.

Arun Giridhar

Dr. Arun Giridhar

Dr. Arun Giridhar joined the group as a graduate student in Fall 2005. He developed a method to solve the long-standing problem of synthesizing multicomponent distillation configurations with a focus on reducing the heat duty requirement. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in Fall 2008 and is currently a post-doctoral researcher with the Engineering Research Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (ERC-SOPS) at Purdue University. He is working on real-time process control and informatics in particulate and pharmaceutical systems.
