Seawalls and coastal forests can reduce damage and death, according to new research published by Assistant Professor Roshanak Nateghi and a group of researchers. Nateghi and her team were interviewed by Futurity News, an online compilation of the latest discoveries from top research universities around the world.

Nateghi used a modeling method called Random Forest, which harnesses numerous “decision trees” to capture complex non-linear relationships of data, to study data from four historic Pacific tsunamis in 1896, 1933, 1960, and 2011.

"We analyzed these four tsunamis and found that statistically, seawalls above 5 meters are related to a decrease in destruction rate," said Nateghi.
