Engr 104 revision to class hoursTO: The
Faculty of the College of Engineering FROM: The Faculty of
the Department of Engineering Education and DATE: December
7, 2006 SUBJECT: Revision to class hours – ENGR 104 The Faculty of the Department of
Engineering Education and the First-Year Curriculum Committee have approved the
revision of class hours for ENGR 104, an elective first-year engineering
course. This action is now submitted to
the Engineering Faculty with a recommendation for approval. Current: ENGR
104 Introduction to Engineering and
Purdue Sem. 1.
class 2, credit 1 Weekly small group seminars led
by upper-class engineering students supplementing First-Year Engineering
Lectures (ENGR 100), enabling a broader understanding of engineering disciplines
at Purdue and providing skills for transition to the professional schools and academic
success. Proposed: ENGR
104 Introduction to Engineering and
Purdue Sem. 1.
class 1, credit 1 Weekly small group seminars led
by upper-class engineering students supplementing First-Year Engineering
Lectures (ENGR 100), enabling a broader understanding of engineering
disciplines at Purdue and providing skills for transition to the professional
schools and academic success. Reason: The current class hours includes concurrent
attendance with the large ENGR 100 lectures and is an optional self-selected
course. The combining of these classes
was done to encourage students to enroll (and to remain registered) in the
seminar classes. However, the combined
registration causes numerous problems with registration, scheduling, grading,
learning communities, and overall student confusion. Thus, it is desirable to schedule and grade
ENGR 104 independently of ENGR 100, eliminating the aforementioned
problems. This action does not change
the current requirement for students to take/complete ENGR 100. Nor, will ENGR
104 be considered a suitable substitute for ENGR 100. . _______________________________ Kamyar Haghighi, Head Department of Engineering Education |
