Subject: New Graduate Level Course - BME 600 Mentoring for Combined Degree (MD/PhD) Students in BME

The Faculty of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering has approved the following new course and submits it for your approval.

BME 600  Mentoring for Combined Degree (MD/PhD) Students in BME

Sem. 1, 2, and SS. Cr. 0.

May be repeated for credit.

Prerequisite: Admission to Combined MD/PhD Degree Program.

Course Description:  Specialized course for combined degree students (MD/PhD) intended to maintain communication and orientation to the BME graduate program in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering during the first two years of combined degree program.  Requirements include attendance at one or more BME seminars on the West Lafayette campus; at least two research planning sessions with BME faculty mentors, BME Graduate Programs Coordinator, or Assistant Head; and participation in at least one additional graduate program activity.

Reasons:  Combined degree students are strongly encouraged to begin serious research activity during the summers before and after their first year of Indiana University School of Medicine courses.  During these summers they are registered for research credit and are recognized as active graduate students in the Purdue BME PhD program.  However, during the regular academic year the students typically are not registered in Purdue courses and thereby lose active student status and related privileges. In addition, they often lose contact with and orientation to the graduate program, which is ultimately detrimental to the student’s research program.  By requiring students to register for this new course, students will remain active in Purdue’s BME graduate program, fee rates will remain constant, and mentoring in the processes of orientation and research planning on the West Lafayette campus will continue uninterrupted.
