Engineering Faculty Document No. 43-03

March 26, 2004

TO:                  The Faculty of the Schools of Engineering

FROM:            The Faculty of the School of Civil Engineering

DATE:             March 26, 2004

SUBJECT:       Change of Grading Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

The Faculty of the School of Civil Engineering has approved a change in the grading requirements for general education electives used to help satisfy the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Current Requirement:

Although there is currently no statement in the Schools of Engineering Catalog, it has been standard practice to allow the pass/not pass grading option to be used only for general education electives.  With the exception of ENGR 100, no other course used to help satisfy degree requirements can be taken with the pass/not pass option.

Proposed Requirement:

The pass/not pass option may not be used for any courses required for graduation (with the exception of ENGR 100.)

Reason:

The pass/not pass option is most often used by students to provide an easier passage through a course.  This does not promote the level of learning that the student is capable of achieving or that the faculty desires.
