Subject:  Creation of new courses supporting Five Term Co-Op Program under revised Subject Identifier Format

The faculty of the Cooperative Engineering Education Committee has approved the creation of five new courses to support the existing Five Term Cooperative Education Program, and they are detailed in the following document.  These courses will replace the existing departmental work experience courses for new students, and the old course numbers will be returned to the departments once all students started under the old system have completed their programs.  This action is now submitted to the Engineering Faculty with a recommendation for approval.

FIVE SESSION UNIVERSITY – INDUSTRY COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Cooperative Education Program is a previously existing faculty and Board of Trustees approved, certificate granting Professional Practice work experience program, with over 50 years of successful history at Purdue University.  Previously, the registration of students for work experience classes was handled with a unique series of courses contained within each participating department, typically titled "Work Experience I – V".  With the advent of several new Professional Practice programs, a new Subject Identifier, PPE (Professional Practice – Engineering), has been approved for the exclusive use of the College of Engineering.  To consistently handle all students participating in some form of Professional Practice, a new set of work experience classes should be established, and the use of the old courses should be phased-out once the students started under the existing registration system have completed their programs.  Departmental distinction under the new registration scheme will be established through the following Division assignment:

School                                                                                      Division

Aeronautics and Astronautics                                                                1

Agricultural and Biological Engineering                                      2

Biomedical Engineering                                                             3

Chemical Engineering                                                                            4

Civil Engineering                                                                                   5

Electrical and Computer Engineering                                         6

Engineering Education                                                               7

Industrial Engineering                                                                            8

Material Science Engineering                                                                 9

Mechanical Engineering                                                             10

Nuclear Engineering                                                                              11

The new courses will be established as variable title courses.  No other changes to the format of the existing Co-Op program are currently recommended.

To handle the issue of registration and certificate progress under the new PPE Subject Identifier, it is recommended that the faculty approve the following courses:
