SUBJECT:    Admission to the Professional Programs in Engineering

The Faculty of the Department of Freshman Engineering and the Freshman Engineering Curriculum Committee have approved changes to the first-year program for students in Freshman Engineering.  As a result, it is necessary to modify the courses used in calculating the Engineering Admissions Index (EAI), used in determining students' eligibility for admission to the professional programs in engineering.  This action is now submitted to the Engineering Faculty with a recommendation for approval.

Changes

CHM 136, CS 160, and ENGR 126 and 126H are added to the list of courses that will be included in the calculation of the EAI.  Courses they replaced, and any other courses no longer specifically required in the freshman program, are deleted.  These include CS 152, 154, 156, and 158; ENGR 106 and 116; ENGL 101, 101I, and 103; and COM 114.

Reason

Existing policies were established by EFD 46-99, in March 2000, which provides, in part, that:  "Necessary revisions in the exact courses which make up the EAI will be made and reported, when needed, by the Department of Freshman Engineering and the Freshman Engineering Curriculum Committee to the engineering faculty."  The supporting documentation attached reflects the existing practice and the modifications proposed herein, in satisfying the quoted requirement.  The modified policies and procedures are intended for implementation for students who enroll in Freshman Engineering at Purdue in May 2004 and thereafter.
