Re:      ENGR 404 - Repeat Credit, Change of Prerequisite, and Change of Title and Course Description

The Department of Freshman Engineering has approved the addition of repeat credit and changes in the course title and description for ENGR 404 to be effective in the fall semester of 2002. Approval of the faculty in the Schools of Engineering is now requested.

FROM:
ENGR 404    Instruction and LeadershipSem 1, class 1, cr. 1. Open to upperclassmen leading sections in ENGR 104

Description:   Under the supervision of an engineering faculty member, upperclassmen enrolled in the Schools of Engineering will lead engineering freshmen to a successful career at Purdue University by serving as group leaders in ENGR 104. Student leaders will serve as advisors/teachers in classes with approximately 20 freshmen. Leaders will be required to complete a final report consisting of an evaluation of ENGR 104 and a self-evaluation of their performance and growth resulting from the teaching experience. The faculty member will provide common instruction on group facilitation and content to the student leaders.

TO:
ENGR 404
Instruction, Mentorship, and Leadership Sem 1. Class 1, cr. 1. (May be repeated for credit.) Prerequisite: Permission of instructor required.

Description:   Selected students enrolled in professional programs in the Schools of Engineering lead sections of ENGR 104. Common instruction on appropriate teaching methods, ENGR 104 content, mentorship, and leadership. Preparation of class outlines, development of teaching evaluation method, and formal reflection on performance and growth resulting from the teaching experience.

Reason:   Repeat Credit. The purpose of ENGR 404 is to provide peer mentors with consistent and current department and university information and prepare them to teach the content of ENGR 104. The information presented in ENGR 404 changes every year based on changes in the needs of our freshman engineering students, our educational philosophy, and department and university resources and policies. For this reason, peer mentors are required to attend ENGR 404 each semester that they teach ENGR 104. Potentially, peer mentors could teach ENGR 104 four times if they start in the fall of their sophomore year and teach each fall through the fall of their fifth year (these are typically Coop students). In Fall 2001, there were four peer mentors that were teaching ENGR 104 for the third time. Returning peer mentors are a valued asset to the ENGR 104/404 program as they serve as mentors to the new peer leaders and provide valuable feedback and insight on the program.

Prerequisite. The wording has been changed to permission of instructor required.

Course Title and Description. The title and description change better reflect the philosophy and content of the ENGR 404 course. We emphasize a mentoring relationship between the peer mentors and their freshmen students. This is reflected in the course learning objectives for ENGR 104, which states that:

Successful completion of ENGR 104 will enable the freshman engineer to:

·        Make an academic transition from high school to Purdue life,

·        Make a personal transition from high school to Purdue life,

·        Have a realistic perspective of what it takes to succeed as an engineer,

·        Balance academic and personal life,

·        Understand the academic and career opportunities within the different fields of engineering,

·        Develop a mentor-mentee relationship with an upper-classman,

·        Develop a network of classmates with whom to study and socially interact, and

·        Take advantage of Purdue University resources and opportunities.
