RE: New course ENGR 196 – Professional Internship I

The faculty of the Department of Freshman Engineering have approved the following new course. This action is now submitted to the engineering faculty with a recommendation for approval.

ENGR 196 Professional Internship I Sem. 1 and 2. SS. cr.0. Prerequisites: approval by the student’s academic advisor and professional practice administrator. (May be repeated).

Professional experience in engineering. Program coordinated by department with cooperation of participating employers. Students submit a summary report.

Reason: This course provides a vehicle for freshman engineering (FrE) students (but not necessarily “first-year” students) to gain professional engineering experience while maintaining their student status. There has been a growing need for this course because of: 1) more FrE students are securing opportunities to intern and 2) FrE students who remain in FrE more than 2 semesters need a vehicle to maintain their student status (for financial aid, visa reasons, or medical insurance purposes) while having an opportunity to intern. In many cases, having the opportunity to practice professionally can help students make better decisions in choosing their professional school as well as help students better understand the relevancy and importance of many of the principles they are learning. This course may be repeated in case a company desires that a student intern for more than one semester.
