The proposed course would meet a demonstrated need, from three perspectives: (1) meeting students' needs, in preparing students for the professional workforce; (2) meeting the college's "bold goal for impact": "increase our diversity"; and (3) meeting industry's need for a more diverse workforce. Additionally, Purdue engineering was ranked 2nd in the nation for preparing its graduates for professional practice in a Wall Street Journal 2010 survey. We won't be able to maintain prestige in this area if we don't pursue innovative strategies for preparing our graduates for professional practice.
The EFD demonstrates a good deal of thought put into the design of this learning experience as well as the use of a research basis to inform both the decision to propose the course and the design of the course. Research suggests that our female students are particularly in need of a course like this, given that they are less likely to persist in an engineering career than their male counterparts and that they overcome a number of obstacles that are less common for male engineers to face.
