Education Innovation - First-Year Engineering Teaching Academy to revolutionize experience
With an endowment from Geoffrey Crowley, BSIDE 1974, Purdue will establish a First-Year Engineering (FYE) Teaching Academy to prepare engineering faculty to be the most effective educators using research-based teaching methods and multidisciplinary curriculum.
This program will incorporate the School of Engineering Education’s recently developed Ideas to Innovation Learning Laboratory i2i, which takes first-year engineering students out of a large lecture hall and immerses them in the entire engineering design process, allowing students to follow a problem from concept to completion. In addition, the program allows Ph.D. students or postdoctoral researchers who wish to pursue engineering education to teach a section of the lab under the instruction of experienced faculty.
The establishment of the First-Year Engineering Teaching Academy will afford an excellent professional development opportunity for the future faculty fellows to learn to teach effectively in a state-of-the-art learning environment while enhancing the first-year learning experience of engineers at Purdue. While the program will be developed and piloted at one school, the ideas and concepts can be easily transferred and adapted across the sector, again establishing the University as a leader in educational innovation built on scholarship and research.
