The School of Materials Engineering at Purdue has gone through many name changes and face transformations over the last five decades, and in the first part of my talk, I would like to share briefly my personal journey through those changes.
In the second part of my presentation, selected isothermal diffusion studies carried out in single phase and multiphase ternary and quaternary alloy systems are presented to highlight various phenomena including uphill diffusion, zero-flux planes, flux reversals, double serpentine diffusion paths, and demixing of alloys. The main challenges in the experimental determination of interdiffusion coefficients in multicomponent systems are briefly addressed.
Mysore A. Dayananda received B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Mysore in 1955, and Diploma of the Indian Institute of Science in Metallurgy in 1957 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He earned from Purdue University M.S.Met.E. and Ph.D. degrees in 1961 and 1965, respectively. He joined Purdue faculty as Assistant Professor in 1966 and has been part of the MSE family under the various titles of Associate Professor (1970), and Professor (1975), Interim Head (Summer 1999) and Associate Head (2005-2007). He has held Visiting Professorships at Munster University in Germany (1980) and at the Indian Institute of Science (1992) in Bangalore, India. He has mentored about 50 graduate students for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, published about 115 technical papers and edited four books. He discovered the phenomenon of zero-flux planes and flux reversals in multicomponent diffusion. He is a recipient of the MSE Best Teacher Award (1982, 1990), and the Engineering Faculty Engagement/Service Excellence Award (2003). He is a Fellow of ASM International, a member of The Metallurgical Society, Sigma Xi, and ASEE and of the Advisory Board of Diffusion and Defect Data journal. He is the Honorary Chairman and plenary session speaker of the 10th International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids (DSL-2014) to be held in Paris in June 2014.
