The CoE United Mailing List

Interested in the CoE United Mailing list? All College of Engineering Staff are eligible to be on this list. This includes PRF staff assigned to Engineering, Temp Staff, etc. If you are not on this list already, please Mail The Group and/or your supervisor to check to see if you are in all the mailing lists that you need to be on (examples: Engr A/P list, C/S list, departmental staff lists, etc)

The CoE United list is intended as a means of spreading a wide net to obtain answers to questions from the entire CoE Staff pool, a collective hive mind that holds decades of Purdue experience.

This list is not intended for use with questions for specific groups such as the Business Office or IT assistance, since those types of groups have well established processes for asking questions, and internal processes for obtaining answers for you.

An example that we can think of would be, “We plan to host a small meeting/conference with 25 attendees from various universities. Can someone tell me who might be able to help me with things I need to think about?”

We’re trying to find the balance between starting an email thread and overburdening one’s email, which is quite difficult in today’s world of several hundred emails per day.

To this end, we’re considering that the list would be moderated, not to prevent legitimate questions, but rather to prevent possible spam from going through. We will make every attempt to release items held for moderation quickly.

Once a question goes out, and someone knows the answer, the person with that knowledge could reply to the coeunited-list, thereby increasing the collective knowledge of the group. If the answer is complex and needs additional conversations, perhaps one could reply to the group with a statement such as “I have the answer to this, but will take this conversation to a one-on-one” - that way if it is a complex conversation, it will not clog up everyone’s email, and will still allow interested parties to participate off-list.

In our earlier example with the small meeting/conference, the person with the information could go: “If there is a registration fee, then work with Conferences. If there’s no registration, send me an email, and I can help you get in touch with the right people”
