Aired: July 11, 2012 from noon to 1:00pm EDT The St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative is a 501(c)(3) organization that formed under the shadow of a 1995 report by the Environmental Working Group, titled "Weed Killers by the Glass". Since 1996, the Initiative has worked to promote good land use and conservation practices in an effort to reduce contaminants in the St. Joe River that serves as source drinking water for the Fort Wayne area. For 16 years, the Initiative has monitored water quality at 24 tributary sites in the nearly 700,000-acre watershed. Although detecting trends and assessing the impacts of implementing practices have been problematic, data have been useful for identifying areas of concern and pollutants of concern in the watershed. |
