Vision

The SMART Film Consortium’s long-term vision is to develop the first foundry dedicated to non-silicon sensors. A foundry is a shared manufacturing facility, which were vital to the rapid growth of Silicon Valley. We envision a foundry dedicated to supporting the fast development of low-cost, high-volume non-silicon sensors – generating faster product development pilot runs and lower cost per unit – making innovation much more accessible and affordable.

ACCESS TO UNIQUE CAPABILITIES

Purdue is uniquely well-positioned to achieve this vision. As a Top 10 Engineering university located in America’s manufacturing heartland, our interdisciplinary faculty members are known to get the job done.

The team is headquartered in the $90 million Birck Nanotechnology Center, utilizing Birck’s exceptional inventory of scalable manufacturing tools. More than 40 students, faculty and staff are working together on SMART consortium and the regional IoT network leveraging $40M Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN) project. The research involves the whole vertical stack from artificial intelligence-enabled manufacturing, materials and devices, hybrid integration, high performance electronics to low power communication, networking and advanced machine-learning to obtain accurate data from low-cost sensors in harsh outdoor or noisy environment.
