Michael Sangid
Michael Sangid is the Reilly Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics/Professor of Materials Engineering. As the Reilly Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, he is recognized for his academic contributions to materials science, solid mechanics and manufacturing and has been expanding Purdue's reach into national security and defense through applied research and expanded lab space. He is developing new approaches to the design, manufacture and life analysis of structures and materials - leading to safer, more energy-efficient and higher-performing aerospace components.
Sangid's research activities combine knowledge of materials science, solid mechanics and advanced manufacturing to solve complex problems in materials behavior and processing. His research group employs physics-based computational modeling and design tools, which are experimentally validated and verified. The goal of this work is to improve our understanding and our tools for designing, processing, and lifing materials through simulation-based modeling of the microstructural defects. His focus is on structural materials for direct applications in Aerospace Engineering.
He also serves as principal director of the Advanced Computational Materials and Experimental Evaluation (ACME) Laboratory whose philosophy is to simultaneously address fundamental research needs and implement this knowledge into integrated models that can directly aid in and transform our design methodologies providing pragmatic engineering solutions.
Sangid earned B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has received numerous awards and honors, including an NSF CAREER Award, DARPA Director's Award and Purdue University Faculty Scholar.
