Congratulations to the 32 teachers from 16 primary schools for completing the 2023 Lighthouse Maths program delivered by Scitech in partnership with Chevron Australia. Participants officially finished the year long program by coming together at the Scitech Discovery Centre to celebrate their achievement and present their experiences from the year. A common theme from the participants’ presentations was that the Powerful Problem-Solving approach to maths used by the program has seen increased engagement and made maths classes accessible for all skill levels. This approach supports students in randomised groups to work together on maths problems in front of whiteboards, increasing students' collaboration skills to teach and help each other and strengthening their confidence in speaking in front of the class when sharing their working. Teachers said the focus on helping students with targeted questioning rather than providing the answer has allowed both the students and themselves to gain confidence. One teacher even said the Lighthouse Maths program has made maths the cool thing to do at their school! The participants also agreed that the peer support and training from Lighthouse Maths coaches, teachers who have previously completed the program, was essential to implementing the program in their classroom and has allowed them to become leaders in their own school in the Powerful Problem-Solving approach. Lighthouse Maths is an important part of Scitech’s commitment to providing opportunities for teachers to further their skills and knowledge in STEM teaching so they are ready to future-proof students. Math Smart! & Science Smart! – A Systemic Leadership Model for Student Success in Math and Science. In closing achievement gaps in mathematics and science, the nation has made minimal gains since 2005, while the diversity of our nation’s students has grown dramatically. Math Smart! and Science Smart!, developed by IDRA and tested in partnership with diverse school districts, were designed to address these gaps. Math Smart! and Science Smart! build excitement around STEM teaching and learning, raising student achievement and closing gaps. Unlike one-size-fits-all programs, these models assessed contexts to design tailored strategies that build on student and school strengths. Each component was grounded in research and best practices on STEM teaching for diverse students. https://idra.news/50th
