Civil Engineering Ph.D. student Jinglin Jiang has received a 2023-2024 ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Grant-in-Aid Award, a $10,000 award given to outstanding graduate students conducting research in High Performance Buildings or HVAC fields. The evaluation criteria for this prestigious award include academic performance, the quality and significance of the student's research, and the likelihood of future involvement within ASHRAE.

Jinglin is co-advised by Assistant Professor Nusrat Jung and Associate Professor Brandon Boor. Her Ph.D. dissertation is entitled, “How human activities and ventilation systems impact indoor air composition and indoor chemistry in buildings”. The objective of her research is (1.) characterize gas- and particle-phase emissions in real-time during common indoor human activities, including surface disinfection, cleaning, and hair care routines, and evaluate the impact of indoor emissions on human health and the atmospheric environment; and (2) investigate how HVAC system impacts indoor ozone chemistry and new particle formation in buildings. Results of this research will improve understanding of VOC and particle emissions from indoor human activities and ozone-initiated indoor chemistry, which will further help developing guidelines to optimize ventilation strategies to improve indoor air quality.
