From the Dean

Welcome again to Purdue Engineering Impact Online. In this edition, we share news about students and faculty who are working together to solve a critical global problem: the need for clean drinking water. Students in our Global Engineering Program are putting traditional engineering solutions to work in Latin America to make a meaningful impact in the lives of local residents and school children whose drinking water has long been contaminated. Meanwhile faculty are developing an aluminum alloy for a mobile system that not only purifies water but generates electricity.

We also are inspired by the stories from our new Center for Implantable Devices, where research is aimed at preventing seizures and blindness, and tiny devices are being developed to operate prosthetic limbs by thought. We also share the work of doctoral students in mechanical engineering who are developing super-precise sensors and other technologies for food safety, crime forensics, and pharmaceutical manufacturing that dramatize our students' broad problem-solving capabilities, ambition, and brilliance.

In closing, let me take this opportunity to invite you to enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of campus life this fall and to see firsthand some of the exciting things we are doing in the College to move the world forward. Homecoming is October 22. I hope that you will mark your calendars and plan to join us.
