Project

Development of a Carbon-Negative Process for Comminution Energy Reduction and Energy-Relevant Mineral Extraction through Carbon Mineralization and Biological Carbon Fixation

Funded by: ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy) of DOE

Introduction: This project aims to develop a carbon-negative pathway for copper and rare earth element (REE) extraction from mineral ores by integrating carbon mineralization and biological carbon fixation. In collaboration with the University of Kentucky, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, and the University of Utah, the project explores innovative processes to simultaneously reduce grinding energy consumption and capture CO₂. Purdue University leads the life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) to assess the environmental and economic performance of newly developed processes.
