Using A Chain Saw Safely

Background

  • The most important factor in chain saw safety is the user.

Tips

  • When operating a chain saw, always wear personal protection equipment (PPE), such as trim-fitting clothes, safety hard hat, hearing protective device, safety goggles, non-slip shoes, and gloves.
  • To start a chain saw, place it on level ground, hold it with one hand, and pull the starter rope with the other.
  • Keep others away when starting and using a chain saw.
  • Be especially careful that the saw does not strike a nail or stone while operating.
  • While sawing, be sure the saw's bumper is against the tree so it doesn't jerk out of your hands.
  • When carrying a chain saw, make sure the engine is off and the blade is pointed to the rear.

Chain Saw Safety

The most important factor in chain saw safety is the operator. Personal protection equipment such as trim fitting clothes, a safety hard hat, hearing protective devices, safety goggles, non-slip shoes and gloves should be provided.

To start the saw, place it on level ground. Hold the saw with one hand and pull the starter rope with the other. Keep others away when starting the engine.

Use extreme caution to be sure the chain does not strike nails or stones when it is operating. Be sure the bumper is against the tree while sawing so the saw does not jerk out of your hands. The engine should be stopped and the saw carried with the blade pointed to the rear.
