Fall Check of Grain Handling Equipment
Background
- September is the time to safety-check all your grain handling equipment, especially the motors and drives.
Tips
- On equipment that has been left unused around the grain drying area, look for mouse nests in open port motors and for chewed and frayed belts.
- Test-run all equipment, checking for worn bearings.
- Give each unit a routine pre-use lubrication and service adjustment.
- Check portable extension cords to make sure insulation is still intact.
- Be sure there's a third grounding conductor, which is so essential to safety in using portable equipment.
- Make sure the grounding system is carried clear back to the central electric service.
