Ted Tharp
BSChE '98
Tharp serves as the associate director within the AbbVie Product Development S&T organization, with a primary responsibility supporting the tech transfer of products in the AbbVie pipeline. AbbVie is a member of LyoHUB, an industry-university consortium based at Purdue University focused on advancing freeze-drying technologies for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Tharp joined AbbVie in 2015 and has over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including five years with Novartis Vaccines and 12 with Eli Lilly.
During his career he has held positions in engineering, operations, and manufacturing science and technologies, with a focus on parenteral manufacturing. The experience has involved formulation of solutions, suspensions and emulsions; the filling of liquids and powder products; lyophilization of both vials and bulk pans; and work with terminal sterilization of final product. He has also supported multiple product transfers and validations between sites, while supporting global manufacturing networks.
Tharp frequently returns to campus to assist with his fraternity, engage with and mentor students and provide talks and guidance as part of student organizations such as the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering. He coordinated the logistics for 20 students to visit AbbVie's facility in Westport, Ireland a part of Purdue's pharmaceutical manufacturing study abroad program.
