Tuba Marjan — India

Biomedical Engineering, Ph.D.
Graduation: Spring 2027

My research focuses on developing a composite biomaterial platform to study muscle tissue regeneration. This work is important because it aims to improve our understanding of cell-matrix interactions in the context of wound healing.

Q

What do you hope to do after graduation?

A

I plan to continue conducting research in academia while also pursuing a career in teaching.

Q

What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?

A

The best advice I got was to focus on the process not just the results. Research doesn't always go as planned and experiments fail more often than they succeed. Instead of stressing over outcomes I learned to appreciate the troubleshooting, and critical thinking that come with it.

Q

Why did you choose Purdue Engineering for your graduate studies?

A

My background was in biomedical science but I wanted to apply that knowledge in an engineering context to develop real-world solutions. Purdue's interdisciplinary Biomedical Engineering program provided the perfect platform to bridge both fields allowing me to expand my expertise in engineering while leveraging my foundation in biology. The program's emphasis on collaborative research, hands-on experience, and innovative problem-solving has equipped me with the skills to address complex challenges in healthcare.

Q

If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?

A

Interdisciplinary, Innovative, Collaborative.

Q

What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?

A

For fun, I like to explore local coffee shops, take walks along the Wabash River, and check out events happening on campus. Purdue has a great mix of activities, from football games to random pop-up events. I also enjoy spending time with friends at West Lafayette's parks and trails, and when I need a break from research.

Q

Favorite quote and why?

A

"A mother's love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible." - Marion C. Garretty. This quote reminds me of my mom because her love, strength, and sacrifices have always pushed me forward. Even when the odds were against me, her love, belief, and prayers made the impossible possible.

Q

Favorite food and why?

A

Dosa is my favorite. It reminds me of my childhood when my mom made them for breakfast on Sundays. Even now, it is more than just food, it is a comforting memory of home and the simple joys of childhood.
