Samridhi Kulshrestha — India

Biomedical Engineering, Ph.D.
Graduation: May 2027

My research focuses on glaucoma treatment by developing biodegradable ocular implants that release medication slowly and consistently in the eye, reducing the need for frequent dosing. Imagine waking up every day knowing that your vision is slipping away - not because there's no treatment, but because the daily burden of eye drops is too much to keep up with. By making glaucoma treatment more reliable and effortless, I hope to give patients the freedom to focus on life, not just their disease.

Q

What do you hope to do after graduation?

A

To be honest, I'm still figuring out where I fit in - whether it's in the fast-paced world of industry or the intellectually stimulating realm of academia. But I'm embracing this uncertainty, knowing that it's all part of the journey. My PhD journey is a treasure hunt, and every internship and networking opportunity is a clue that brings me closer to discovering my true purpose.

Q

What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?

A

Before starting grad school, I was reminded that "failure is not the opposite of success, but a part of it." This advice helps me reframe my setbacks and view them as opportunities for growth and learning.

Q

Why did you choose Purdue Engineering for your graduate studies?

A

Inspired by my advisor's experience as a visiting professor at Purdue and driven by the university's strong reputation for interdisciplinary research, I decided to pursue my PhD here. The positive experiences shared by my seniors from my home country, who were already studying at Purdue, further solidified my decision.

Q

If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?

A

Empowering Engineering Leaders

Q

What is the coolest thing you have encountered at Purdue?

A

The Purdue Nuclear Power Plant is definitely the coolest thing I've encountered at Purdue. As one of the country's only nuclear power plants on a university campus, it provides a unique opportunity for hands-on learning and research. As a part of a course called 'campus connections', I was fortunate enough to visit that.

Q

What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?

A

Purdue has a vibrant cultural scene, and I enjoy attending concerts, plays, and exhibitions at the Loeb Fountain and the Purdue Memorial Union. There's always something new and exciting to discover!

Q

If you could talk with any person, living or dead, who would it be and why?

A

There's something special about connecting with people who share your roots and heritage. For me, talking to Sundar Pichai would be like talking to a mentor, as we share the same alma mater, IIT Kharagpur. And similarly, chatting with Priyanka Chopra Jonas would be like talking to a long-lost cousin who's made it big in the world!

Q

What's something unique about you, or something most people don't know?

A

I'm a laid-back person with big dreams and aspirations, and I have a habit of romanticizing each moment of life. My friends call me 'the silent type,' but in my mind, I'm living a grand adventure!

Q

Favorite quote and why?

A

We are all walking each other home. "This quote, attributed to Ram Dass, is a beautiful reminder that we are all on this journey of life together, and that our individual paths are interconnected." In scientific language, you could say we're all networking - haha! I love this quote because it speaks to the power of community, support, and connection. It reminds me that we're not alone, and that our experiences are linked to those of others.

Q

Favorite food and why?

A

I have a soft spot for Indian cuisine because my mom's cooking is the best! She's always experimenting with new recipes and flavors, and her love for cooking is contagious. Mexican food is also a close second, thanks to my love for beans in all forms - from refried to black beans, and everything in between!

Q

Favorite vacation spot and why?

A

I treasure vacations that allow me to reconnect with nature and my own spirit. A secluded cabin in the woods or a peaceful beach retreat is my idea of bliss - a chance to unwind, reflect, and rejuvenate.
