Rajeshree P. Varma — India

Ph.D.
Graduation: December 2026

My research focuses on evaluating the wear and fatigue behavior of additively manufactured (AM) parts subjected to shot peening. This study is crucial as it explores how shot peening can enhance the durability and performance of AM components, which are increasingly used in key applications across various industries.

Q

What do you hope to do after graduation?

A

After I graduate, I would love to work as a scientist at a national lab. It would be amazing to dive into research that pushes the boundaries of engineering, helping to discover and develop new technologies that could really make a difference to society.

Q

What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?

A

The most valuable advice I received came from my parents as I was preparing to move to the States for my Master's in 2018. My father told me, No one will help you; your knowledge, health, hard work, and money are what will stand by you. At the time, his words seemed harsh, but reflecting on my journey, I understand their profound truth. My mother taught me to embrace the three Ps: patience, passion, and persistence. These guiding principles have been my anchor through challenging times and have continually helped me rediscover my purpose.

Q

If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?

A

Innovative, Rigorous, Collaborative.

Q

What is the coolest thing you have encountered at Purdue?

A

The coolest thing at Purdue is the community of scholars and innovators. I have had the chance to interact with many graduate students, visiting scholars, and exchange students, each deeply involved in fascinating research. What ties us all together is our shared commitment to advancing knowledge through our projects. I recall a bus ride home during which I struck up a conversation with someone about our research, it is amazing how these random encounters can lead to insightful exchanges and new perspectives.

Q

What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?

A

At Purdue, I really enjoy the vibrant campus life. In spring and summer, I love to walk around the beautiful campus and soak up the sun. Even in winter, although it is cold, walking through the snowy landscape can be very peaceful. On Sundays, I volunteer locally, which helps me give back to the community and meet a wide variety of people. One of my favorite activities is walking along the Wabash River, it is a perfect way to relax and unwind.

Q

Favorite quote and why?

A

"One day or day one, you decide." This quote deeply resonates with me as it highlights the importance of taking action now instead of delaying our dreams. It reminds me that every moment presents an opportunity for a new beginning, and the choices we make shape our future. This perspective has been a powerful motivator in both my personal and academic life, pushing me to seize opportunities as they come and maintain a sense of urgency that is crucial for making progress each day.

Q

Favorite vacation spot and why?

A

Right now, my ideal vacation spot is home in India. I have not been back since summer 2022, and I miss my family a lot. Any chance I get, I would love to visit, spend time with loved ones, enjoy home-cooked meals, and relive cherished memories.
