Andres Gomez Arauz — Panama City, Panama
Agricultural Engineering, MS
Graduation: May 2025
My research focuses on grain storage challenges impacting the quality of U.S. imported corn in tropical climates, with a case study in Mexico. This work is essential to improving post-harvest management, reducing losses, and ensuring food security in regions where environmental conditions make grain preservation particularly challenging.
Q
What do you hope to do after graduation?
A
Build and lead a company that redefines sustainability by addressing real-world challenges through innovation and technology. I want to develop solutions that increase efficiency, strengthen resilience, and promote environmental responsibility while making a meaningful impact in agriculture and beyond.
Q
What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?
A
"The journey is the reward." Grad school is not just about the degree or the final outcome, but about the knowledge gained, the challenges faced, and the relationships built along the way. Learning to appreciate the process itself has been one of the most valuable lessons.
Q
Why did you choose Purdue Engineering for your graduate studies?
A
Purdue's reputation for excellence in engineering, combined with its strong research programs and global network, made it the ideal place for my graduate studies. The university provides a rigorous academic environment and outstanding opportunities for professional and personal growth.
Q
If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?
A
Engineering THE future.
Q
What is the coolest thing you have encountered at Purdue?
A
The diversity of perspectives and cultures within the graduate community. Engaging with people from different backgrounds has been a unique and enriching experience both academically and personally. But beyond that, the connections and lifelong relationships formed at Purdue have been invaluable. The network of brilliant minds, future leaders, and industry pioneers I've met here has shaped not only my academic journey but also my outlook on collaboration, innovation, and leadership.
Q
What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?
A
I enjoy running and exploring new places. When possible, I take time to connect with nature and appreciate the scenic trails around Purdue. But beyond that, I make the most of networking events, professional meetups, and industry conferences, because sometimes the best ideas and collaborations come from casual conversations in unexpected places. Whether it's a formal networking session or a discussion over coffee, Purdue offers endless opportunities to meet inspiring people, build meaningful connections, and be part of a forward-thinking community.
Q
If you could talk with any person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
A
Marcus Aurelius. His reflections on discipline, virtue, and resilience are timeless, and I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss how to apply his philosophy in modern life-our century's fast-paced, hyper-connected reality, where distractions are endless and true wisdom is rare.
