Inaugural GradBridge Program Connects Purdue and Berkeley Engineers with Career-Focused Mentorship

In February 2026, engineering graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from Purdue University and the University of California, Berkeley came together for the inaugural GradBridge program—an ambitious mentoring initiative designed to help the next generation of engineers explore career pathways and prepare for life after graduate school. With more than 240 participants and nearly 60 mentors, GradBridge quickly became the largest graduate mentoring program to date, organized by the Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs office.

What is GradBridge, and what opportunities does it offer participants?

GradBridge is a joint Purdue–UC Berkeley mentoring initiative that connects graduate students and postdocs with experienced professionals through interactive mentoring circles. These conversations highlight the many directions engineering careers can take—from academia and national laboratories to industry, startups, consulting, intellectual property, and science policy. More information about the program is available on the GradBridge website.

During the program, participants engaged in short presentations followed by small-group mentoring circles, where approximately eight graduate students or postdoctoral scholars met with two mentors working within a specific sector. These discussions provided space for candid conversations about career decisions, professional challenges, and opportunities across engineering fields.

Mentors and mentees explored practical topics such as crafting elevator pitches, navigating the job search process, preparing resumes and CVs, understanding interview strategies, and identifying key competencies valued across sectors. Mentors also shared lessons from their own career journeys, helping participants build a clearer roadmap for their next professional steps.

By bringing together 240 graduate students and postdoc mentees and nearly 60 alumni and industry mentorsGradBridge created meaningful connections across institutions and sectors. The program reflects Purdue Engineering’s commitment to empowering graduate researchers with the networks, insights, and mentorship needed to succeed in a wide range of careers.
